Descripción
A Dutch SME specializing in intelligent battery systems and modular engineering seeks European partners for a Eurostars-funded R and D collaboration. The project aims to integrate and further develop an active-balancing, physics-based Battery Management System (BMS) that models each cell s true behavior and redistributes energy to maximize usable capacity, extend pack lifetime, and improve performance — unlocking the full potential of second-life and next-generation battery applications.
Title
Dutch SME developing an advanced battery management system for extended battery lifetime and capacity seeks European Partners for Eurostars R and D Project.
Abstract
This Dutch SME is active in high-tech battery management and modular system design. The core innovation is an intelligent BMS that — unlike traditional BMS platforms which merely monitor — actively manages individual battery cells: it simulates the true cell physics, redistributes energy between cells in real time, and thus enhances usable capacity, extends cycle-life, and improves safety and performance.
Given the accelerating electrification across mobility, storage, and industry — and the inevitable arrival of both second-life batteries and newer battery chemistries with greater cell variability — this solution is highly relevant. The proposed project will:
- Further develop and validate the active-balancing, physics-based BMS for a variety of battery chemistries and configurations.
- Design modular, scalable BMS hardware/software that can be integrated into new battery packs, second-life packs, and energy-storage systems.
- Demonstrate increased usable capacity, extended lifetime, improved performance and reliability in real-world scenarios.
- Provide data and insight into battery behavior, enabling better lifecycle management and reusability of batteries.
The project is aimed at markets such as second-life batteries (reuse / repurposing), stationary energy storage, mobility (EV, hybrid, heavy duty), and future battery chemistries — addressing both sustainability and performance needs.
This proposal is submitted as a market-driven, SME-led Eurostars R and D project, requiring international collaboration to combine battery-system innovation, integrators, and potential manufacturing or deployment partners.
Advantages and innovation
- Unlocking full battery potential: by modeling and managing each cell individually, the BMS enables higher usable capacity and longer lifetime than standard battery management solutions.
- Versatility and scalability: modular system design allows adaptation to diverse battery chemistries and applications (EV, stationary storage, second-life reuse).
- Sustainability and circular economy impact: enabling extended battery lifecycle and reuse, reducing waste and the need for new raw materials.
- Market relevance and timing: addresses critical needs in the electrification era — second-life batteries, storage, variable battery chemistries, and increasing demand for reliable, high-performance battery systems.
- SME-driven, innovation-focused R and D: aligns with Eurostars goals of supporting market-oriented, commercially viable, collaborative innovation.
